The “Deep Punts” will be a quick piece on a set of defensemen priced under $3500 on Draft Kings that afford you the opportunity to save salary here to spend elsewhere.

D – Jakob Chychrun (ARI) – $3,200 DK

Jackob was drafted 16th overall in the 2016 draft and is playing in his first NHL season.  He may not jump out on the score sheet in a given night, but with his increased shots on goal and blocked shots, he is seeing some good Draft Kings numbers over the last few games.  Part of this is due to his average of 1:30 min of Power Play time he has seen in March now that he is playing on PP2.  He has averaged 5.25 Draft Kings points in the last four games.  His ownership started to spike on Saturday night with his 4.0 DK point performance against the Blues.

3/14 (LA) 4.5 DK pts

3/16 (DET) 5.5 DK pts

3/18 (STL) 4 DK pts

3/20 (NSH) 1 DK pt

Jakob only managed 1.0 Draft Kings point last night against the Predators, but tonight he faces the Lightning with the 4th highest expected pace.  This should translate to more blocked shots and now that he is seeing almost 20 minutes per night in March, he should have more shots on goal too.

D – Johnny Oduya (CHI) – $3,000 DK

Johnny Oduya was traded back to Chicago at the trade deadline this year and we have seen increased Draft Kings points ever since.  Even though he hasn’t been getting many shots on goal, he has been standing in the way of a lot of pucks.  In the last 4 games he has averaged 3.75 Draft Kings points.

3/12 (MIN) 4 DK pts

3/14 (MTL) 4.5 DK pts

3/16 (OTT) 3.5 DK pts

3/18 (TOR) 3 DK pts

In his last two games, he blocked 11 shots!  Like Chychrun, he’s been playing 18+ minutes a night, while not a huge volume of ice-time for $3,000 he can easily pay off with peripheral stats.  Since coming back to Chicago, Oduya has recorded a goal or an assist in two of the last five games.

D – Jay Bouwmeester (STL) – $3,400 DK

Bouwmeester was consistent last week in the Fantasy Points category scoring between three and four points in each game.  In March Jay is second on the team in ice time at 22+ min per game.

3/13 (LA) 4 DK pts

3/15 (ANH) 3.5 DK pts

3/16 (SJ) 4 DK pts

3/18 (ARI) 3 DK pts

Jay will rack up points blocking shots and have a chance to get on the scoresheet against the lowly Avs.  The Blues have the 5th highest expected goals tonight at 3.3. When looking for a deep punt on defense, Jay will provide a safe option to return at least a full Draft Kings point per $1,000 in salary and I would recommend slotting him in to give you a good opportunity to pay up elsewhere and still get a good return on his price.

Good luck to everyone out there.  There are a lot of good matchups in tonight’s slate, so hopefully these deep punts can help you spend up in other areas and still get a good return on these low salary guys.
